El Verdadero Día de la Independencia – The True Meaning of Independence Day
Ten tu servilleta… ¡te va a servir!

It’s hot now, and although I’d love an iced coffee, I need you to help me finish this watermelon! Here’s your napkin, it’s a juicy one!
I think that we celebrate some form of Independence Day all over the world. Our nations have gained their independence from someone at some point in time, right?
Well, here in the US we’re about to celebrate the 4th of July, my Canadian family and friends just celebrated July 1st, and my Guatemalan and Mexican friends and family will celebrate September 15th, to name a few.
But HOW we celebrate is more important than we think.
It’s easy to take the true meaning of these Official Holidays for granted unless we remember our history. And for that we need intentionality.
Why do we have to remember our history?
- To teach our children the difference they make and will continue to make in our nation as outstanding moral citizens and as Children of God.
- To remember we are not individuals isolated to this time and space, living only for our pleasure, but that we are part of a long list of generations of patriots that have sacrificed their all to give us what we have today.
- And therefore, if something needs to change, to understand that we and our children are the agents of change.
After all, the family is the smallest unit of a society; it all starts with us.
And even though we are not of this world, but pilgrims on our way to our heavenly home, our heavenly citizenship has the power to ensure that our lives here are filled with peace and tranquility, and at the same time makes us catalysts of true change in the hearts of man by way of His Good News.
Let our Independence Day not just be about going to the fair, watching a parade, eating certain delish foods, or going to the beach, but let us remember our responsibility to teach our kids the true history behind what we do and to thank God and pray for our nation.
The same way we emphasize seeking out the true meaning of Christmas (and not what commercialization and History Revisionists dictate) is the same way we should think about the way we celebrate those dates that are special to our family and our country of birth and residence.
Until next time!
